Founded in 2005, the six member Laurel Ensemble is made up of the Bay Area’s finest musicians, dedicated to creating concerts that celebrate the camaraderie of chamber music. We vary the instrumentation for each piece in a concert in order to experience the broadest musical colors, textures, and styles within one program. Visit us online at www.laurelensemble.com.

Sarah Holzman (Flute) performs with symphonies, opera companies, and chamber ensembles around the San Francisco Bay Area. Ms. Holzman has performed at the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music and Stanford's Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics. Sarah has been heard on the radio on PRI's “Echoes” and has performed at the Festivals of Palma de Mallorca (Spain), Sarasota, and Music Academy of the West. Ms. Holzman teaches at the San Francisco Community Music Center and has degrees from the Oberlin and San Francisco Conservatories as a student of Michel Debost and Tim Day.

Ann Lavin (Clarinet) performs regularly with the Carmel Bach Festival, San Francisco Lyric Opera, Monterey Symphony, and New Music Works. She has performed with the San Francisco Symphony and the San Francisco Opera. Festivals include Wien Modern in Austria, Shira in Jerusalem, and Tanglewood. Ms. Lavin has been Principal Clarinet with the Sarasota and Utah Festival Operas. Her principal teachers were Robert Marcellus, Daniel Gilbert and Charles Neidich. Ann has degrees from Northwestern and DePaul Universities and a DMA from Stony Brook University. Ms. Lavin is on the faculty at UC-Davis.

Christina Mok (Violin) is the Concertmaster of the Stockton Symphony and the Associate Concertmaster of the Symphony Silicon Valley. Ms. Mok earned two degrees at the Guildhall School of Music in London, studying under Yfrah Neaman and Rodney Friend as a recipient of the British Council Fellowship. She was a member of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the Royal Ballet Sinfonia in London. Ms. Mok has been featured at the Evian Festival in France and the Proms in London, and has performed as a soloist with the Janacek Philharmonic, Russian Federal Symphony Orchestra, and the Seoul Symphony Orchestra.

Jenny Douglass (Viola) is the Principal Violist of the Marin Symphony and plays regularly with the San Francisco Symphony. She performs with the New Century Chamber Orchestra and appears on their new CD Together with Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg. Since 1992, Jenny has performed, toured, and recorded with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, and played on their Grammy Award Winning CD, Shadow Dances. Jenny has degrees from Oberlin Conservatory and the Juilliard School, studying with Lynne Ramsey, Karen Tuttle, and Eugene Lehner.

Krisanthy Desby (Violoncello) is Assistant Principal Cello of the Napa Valley Symphony, and has played Principal Cello for the Golden Gate Opera and the Modesto Symphony. Ms. Desby has performed with the San Francisco Symphony, and joined the Moscow Chamber Orchestra on a U.S. tour ending at Carnegie Hall. Performances abroad include the Scotia Festival in Canada, Orquesta Sinfonica de Mineria in Mexico City and Neuberg Kultertage in Austria. She has performed at the Mendocino, Midsummer Mozart, and the Grand Teton Music Festivals. Ms. Desby received degrees at the Peabody Institute and Rice University. Her teachers include Stephen Kates, Shirley Trepel, and Nathanial Rosen.

Lori Lack (Piano) performs as a soloist and chamber musician throughout Europe and the United States. She has performed with the Alexander String Quartet, San Francisco Chamber Orchestra and Gold Coast Chamber Players. She has performed in recital with many artists including Matt Haimovitz and Robin Sharp. Ms. Lack received her degrees from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, the Hochschule für Musik in Vienna, and San Francisco State University. In addition to serving on the faculty of CSU Summer Arts and California Summer Music, she works as an instrumental accompanist at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and San Francisco State University.

The home of English football since 1923, the new Wembley Stadium opened in Spring 2007 and quickly reestablished itself as the country’s leading venue for sports and entertainment events. Looking forward, Wembley Stadium will be the venue for the men’s and women’s football finals for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and will be at the heart of The FA’s 2018 World Cup Bid.

In addition to hosting major events, the stadium operates a very popular official Stadium Tour as well as first class conferencing and banqueting facilities which succeed in attracting thousands of visitors to the stadium all year-round.

The rebuilding of Wembley Stadium has had far-reaching benefits for the local area of Brent and London. Brilliant lyricist and storyteller, virtuoso singer, fiddler, and guitarist, and undisputed master of the hammered dulcimer, John McCutcheon runs the gamut from kid's songs to protest anthems to updates of his Appalachian and Midwestern roots mixed with stunning originals.

In the 1960s John traded the university classroom for the front porches, union halls, and churches of the Appalachians. Under the tutelage of the greats of traditional Southern music, he mastered seven different instruments, became an insightful and powerful singer of traditional songs, and honed an ear for a good story.

In addition to a recent concert DVD (aptly titled John McCutcheon Live), John just released a double CD that encompasses the breadth of his gifts. Word, recorded live at the 2008 National Storytelling Festival, explores John's prodigious gifts as a storyteller, and Song features some of John's very best new songs, including "Old People in Love" and "Streets of Sarajevo."

Real life - including heartaches, happiness, fishing holes, and everything in between - has had a way of finding itself in the middle of Josh Turner songs since he first burst onto the national country music scene.

It's those life experiences that keep drawing him back to what has become his unique yet easily identifiable country sound. "Growing up, traditional country music was always where my heart was at," he says, "because those songs were speaking about the life that I was living in rural South Carolina. It was all about love and work and life and just the everyday stuff that people go through. It has always made me feel good-- the melodies, the lyrics-- so that's what I'm trying to carry on."

Turner's drive to "carry on" has led to his latest CD, Everything is Fine. The album is grounded in the traditional music from his grandparents' record collection he heard growing up, with the addition of fresh sounds that speak to today's music fans. Everything is Fine captures his personal music style more than ever.

Nashville's first taste of that style came with his debut at the Grand Ole Opry in December 2001. The moment has become somewhat legendary in Opry storytelling circles. "When the curtain opened that night," the proverbial storyteller would begin, "no one holding a ticket to the show had ever heard of Josh Turner. But by the end of that chilly Nashville evening, the young singer was all anyone in the audience could talk about." Turner wowed the crowd with his self-penned "Long Black Train", the song that would eventually become his first hit. During this performance, the unknown baritone was showered with several standing ovations.

After being called back for an encore during which the audience rewarded him with another standing ovation, Turner remembers, "I was fighting back the tears out there. I couldn't think straight. I was tore up." Josh Turner's star began shining that night and hasn't dimmed.

Fast forward nearly six years: Turner has become a husband to wife Jennifer and a father to a one-year-old son Hampton, all while quietly ascending the path to country music superstardom. Two of his singles-- "Your Man" and "Would You Go With Me"-- have become multi-week number one hits, he's an in-demand touring act, and he's a first-time nominee in the Country Music Association Awards' prestigious Male Vocalist category.

Turner can also celebrate the success of first-class album sales. His debut album sold more than one million copies and his sophomore album, Your Man, was one of only four country albums to reach double-platinum status in 2006. His is also continuously heralded by critics as one of the brightest young stars in country music today and his voice has been compared to the legendary Johnny Cash. This status is marked by his recent invitation to be one the youngest members of the famed Grand Ole Opry. Turner will be formally inducted by one of his Idols, Vince Gill, on October 27, 2007.

Turner's success since his debut, both personally and professionally, finds its way through the lyrics of his latest disc and leaves the listener feeling uplifted and inspired. The first tune from Everything is Fine to hit the radio is the infectious "Firecracker," a song Turner co-wrote in which he extols the steamy virtues of his female companion: "...When it comes to love, she ain't no slacker / my little darlin' is a firecracker..." Turner says the song exemplifies how traditional country music can be fun and positive.

Things don't get much more positive than with the album's self-penned title track, one of seven songs Turner wrote for the project. The man in "Everything is Fine" enjoys the kind of life to which everyone aspires. To the tune of a banjo and a country fiddle, the song praises the joys of being at peace with family and the Lord, not to mention the joy of hearing an old dog singing and the promise of an upcoming fish fry. "He realizes," says Turner, "that life isn't perfect, but everything is fine."

And though their property values might not be appreciating at dramatic levels, the raucous guitar licks and driving drums confirm that for the folks in Turner's solo-penned "Trailerhood," everything is fine, as well. Love in its many forms is a familiar theme on Turner's third studio album. Ranging from the George Jones classic "One Woman Man" to the sentimental "The Longer the Waiting (the Sweeter the Kiss)" and "Soulmate."

On "Another Try," written by Chris Stapleton and Jeremy Spillman, Turner duets with country superstar Trisha Yearwood about loss and lessons learned..."The reasons I'm alone I know by heart/ But I don't want to spend forever in the dark/ I swear next time I'll hang on for dear life/ If love ever gives me another try." Turner calls the song "one of the best ballads I've ever heard, period. It makes you feel what that guy is feeling in that song, that failure that he's feeling," he says. "It's very relevant to what people go through in everyday life."

The second collaboration on the record is with acclaimed Grammy nominated R&B artist Anthony Hamilton on the inspiring "Nowhere Fast." Hamilton, a co-writer of the song, tailored the tune for Turner. It was upon their first meeting in a Nashville studio that they recorded this track.

Athenaeum Club, London

The Athenaeum Club, usually just referred to as the Athenaeum, is a gentlemen's club standing at 107 Pall Mall, London, England, at the corner of Waterloo Place.

It is noted for its large library, and for a bas-relief frieze decorating the club house exterior. It was long regarded as a clergymen's club and boasts bishops, Cabinet ministers, and peers amongst its members.

The club's facilities include a dining room, a smoking room and a suite of bedrooms. A notable feature of the Club's clock which hangs above the stairs is that it has two figure sevens and no figure eight, the reason for which is uncertain.

1. History

John Wilson Croker, Sir Thomas Lawrence, and some friends founded the club in 1824 for individuals known for scientific, literary or artistic accomplishments as well as patrons of these endeavours. Sir Thomas Lawrence designed the club crest: a head of Athena inside an oval surrounded by the legend "ATHENÆUM CLUB·PALL MALL".

The club house was designed in Neoclassical taste by Decimus Burton. The main entrance and the front of the house on Waterloo Place has a Doric portico with paired columns. There is a continuous balustrade on the piano nobile, the main floor above the ground floor, with an outstanding but costly frieze copied from the Parthenon above. A statue of Pallas Athene by Edward Hodges Baily stands above the porch. The original design was for two storeys; the third was added later. Croker directed the un-original work, resisting pressure from some members (in those pre-refrigeration days) that an ice-house be part of the scheme; hence the rhyme:

I'm John Wilson Croker, I do as I please, instead of an Ice-House I give you a... Frieze!

For many years The Athenaeum Club was widely seen to represent the peak of London's clubland for the public intellectual. Most members of the Athenaeum were men of inherited wealth and status, but, under Rule II, the club additionally admitted men "... of distinguished eminence in Science, Literature, or the Arts, or for Public Service". The admission of men who had gained their social position through intellectual influence and achievement rather than by title or money gave the club an unusual diversity of membership.

The membership of the Athenaeum was originally limited to one thousand, and the waiting list was always long. The cost of the magnificent premises had resulted in a deficit of some £20,000 and 200 supernumerary members were elected in 1832 to restore the finances.

By 1838 the Club was again in straitened circumstances after undertaking expensive remedial action because of the damage caused by the gas lighting. (It was one of the earliest buildings to be lit by this means). To alleviate the situation, 160 supernumeraries were admitted to ordinary membership and an additional forty brought forward from the waiting list. These "forty thieves", as they became known, included Charles Dickens and Charles Darwin. In 1886 the clubhouse was lit by electricity, a relative innovation for London buildings. In 1853, Charles Manby Smith noted the importance of the club - "... from having been wise enough to join the grocer's Plum-pudding Club, they shall end by becoming prosperous enough to join the Whittington Club, or the Gresham Club, or the Athenaeum Club, or the Travellers' Club; or the House of Commons, or the House of Lords either." Elbo Room is located in the historic Mission District of San Francisco on Valencia Street between 17th Street and 18th Street. We are open seven days a week from 5:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. Elbo Room is a 21-and-over club.

The bar originally opened in 1935, as the Prohibition era closed, and has been a place of entertainment ever since. Over the years the spot has operated as a Spanish restaurant, a country-western bar, and one of the country’s first all-women’s night clubs. In 1991, Elbo Room was established as a full bar and place of entertainment.

The building is a two-story structure with the main bar downstairs, a secondary bar adjoins the dance floor and stage upstairs. As a place of year-round entertainment, the club caters to a wide range of musical and cultural tastes. On any given night, live bands and DJs play jazz, funk, soul, Afro-Cuban, hip-hop, rock, indie rock, or alternative music.
